Stephen A. Smith defended Tom Brady on his SiriusXM show following public scrutiny over the broadcaster's sharp critique of NFL officiating. Brady had questioned multiple penalties during FOX's broadcast of the Detroit Lions' 20-17 victory over the Green Bay Packers on October 25, including a roughing the passer call against defensive tackle Karl Brooks. Smith argued that the seven-time Super Bowl champion was hired for his expertise and should not be expected to stay silent in the commentary booth.
As a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, Brady faces league restrictions that prohibit egregious criticism of game officials, with reported fines reaching up to $500,000. Despite public debate, the NFL did not include Brady on its weekly fines list following the Packers-Lions matchup. Meanwhile, Packers safety Xavier McKinney confirmed that the league fined him for publicly criticizing the officiating crew from the same game.
