OLIVER HOLT: Sir James Anderson’s ‘abhorrent’ axing by Lancashire was a soulless act of betrayal and stupidity that will shame the county for decades. It’s easy to see why they are racked with rancour and division

Oliver Holt criticizes Lancashire's leadership for declining to offer Sir James Anderson a new contract for the 2027 season, labeling the move a betrayal. Anderson, who spent 25 years with the county, served as captain and finished the season as Lancashire's Player of the Season after taking 50 wickets. Incoming director of cricket Paul Farbrace and chief executive Richard Kenyon informed Anderson of the decision in an effort to shift toward younger players.

Holt argues that releasing Anderson damages the club's culture and squanders an invaluable mentor for emerging talent. The writer also criticizes county chair Dame Sarah Storey and the board for mishandling the announcement, noting that Anderson was reportedly unable to inform his family before news broke publicly.
