Alexander Zverev has been under intense scrutiny since securing the World No. 1 ranking, with questions being raised over its legitimacy.

Eurosport France journalist Frédéric Verdier strongly criticized Alexander Zverev's rise to World No. 1 during the Paris Masters, arguing that the German "brings nothing extra" to the court. While acknowledging Zverev earned the ranking, Verdier highlighted his 3-9 record against top 10 players and noted that injuries sidelined top rivals Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner for months.
Zverev defended his achievement at the Vienna Open, arguing that staying healthy and physically fit are vital components of professional tennis. Despite losing all five matches against Sinner in 2026, the two-time Grand Slam champion is guaranteed to finish the season as the year-end World No. 1.
