Yevgeny Kafelnikov has raised concerns regarding Ben Shelton's new coaching partnership with Juan Carlos Ferrero ahead of the 2027 season. Shelton announced on social media that Ferrero will join his coaching team alongside his father, Bryan Shelton. Speaking on the 'Hardcourt' show, Kafelnikov questioned whether Ferrero might mistakenly attempt to impose a baseline-heavy Spanish style on Shelton's aggressive, serve-oriented game.
Kafelnikov also highlighted potential logistical challenges, questioning whether Ferrero or Shelton would be willing to make relocation sacrifices between Spain and Florida. Conversely, former Olympic champion Elena Dementieva supported the appointment, noting that Ferrero's clay-court expertise could help Shelton develop his baseline play, rallies, and backhand as he prepares for the upcoming season.
