Key Things to Know
  • Plano voters rejected Proposition A tax hikes aimed at funding a new Dallas Stars arena.
  • The ballot measure would have taxed hotel rooms, rental cars, game tickets, parking, and player game checks.
  • The project retains $700 million from the Plano City Council and up to $250 million from the school district.
The Story in 60 Seconds

Plano residents have voted against Proposition A, rejecting proposed venue tax hikes intended to help fund a new arena for the Dallas Stars. The ballot measure would have levied taxes on rental cars, hotel rooms, game tickets, parking, and visiting players' paychecks to finance an arena and entertainment district at the Shops at Willow Bend.

Despite the setback, the $3 billion redevelopment project remains active, with the roughly $1 billion arena having already secured $700 million from the Plano City Council and up to $250 million from the local school district. City officials are now exploring alternative funding sources, including potential state assistance, ahead of the Stars' current lease expiration in 2031.
