The Boston Red Sox make their final decision on a key relievers $8.25 million contract option after his 1.72 ERA season. Get the details.

The Boston Red Sox announced Sunday that they have exercised right-handed relief pitcher Garrett Whitlock's $8.25 million club option for the 2027 season. The decision keeps the 30-year-old reliever in Boston rather than paying a $1 million buyout. Whitlock posted a 7-2 record with a 1.72 ERA, 26 holds, and four saves during the 2026 campaign.
The roster move comes as Whitlock recovers from a fractured right tibia suffered in September, which requires six weeks in a walking boot but no surgery. Boston also holds a $10.5 million club option for the 2028 season with a $500,000 buyout. He is expected to be ready for spring training.
