The Story in 60 Seconds

Leicestershire's relegation to Division Two of the County Championship has been confirmed after the Cricket Discipline Panel dismissed their appeal against a 19-point penalty. The sanction followed a substandard pitch rated "poor" during an August match against Glamorgan at Uptonsteel Grace Road. The decision means Essex officially retain their Division One status for the 2027 season.

CDP chair Richard Whittam KC heavily criticized Leicestershire's handling of the process, noting the club failed to instruct legal representation for the initial hearing. The panel also cited a Bollywood film crew's use of Grace Road, which left the pitch exposed to elements for 13 hours without a protective mat, as a contributing factor to the pitch's condition.
