The Story in 60 Seconds

Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders used Vaseline on his crossbar and gloves during his clean sheet against Manchester United, according to a report by the Daily Mail. The 21-year-old Belgian was seen applying the petroleum jelly before corners to improve his grip, notably before catching a delivery from Bruno Fernandes and tipping Bryan Mbeumo's late shot onto the crossbar.

Penders reportedly may have picked up the technique from Swedish goalkeeper Karl-Johan Johnsson while playing at Strasbourg. The practice is fully compliant with football laws, as the International Football Association Board has no regulations prohibiting the use of Vaseline on goalkeeper gloves.
