The New York Yankees are likely to look for a platoon partner for Austin Wells instead of an outright replacement, and a perfect option just hit free agency.

Yanks Go Yard writer Stephen Parello argues that free-agent catcher Carson Kelly would be an ideal platoon partner for New York Yankees catcher Austin Wells. Kelly entered the free-agent market after declining his side of a $7.5 million mutual option with the Chicago Cubs. The proposal suggests pairing Kelly's right-handed bat with Wells rather than seeking a high-cost everyday starter on the trade or free-agent market.
Parello notes that Wells struggled against left-handed pitching in the second half of 2026, hitting .148. In contrast, Kelly batted .298 with a .496 slugging percentage against southpaws. The writer suggests a two-year contract could reasonably land Kelly, giving New York an affordable platoon arrangement and experienced insurance behind the plate.
