Nathan Cleary knocked back their lucrative multi-year deal, could Sam Walker say yes?

The PNG Chiefs have targeted Sydney Roosters halfback Sam Walker for their inaugural NRL season in 2028 after missing out on Nathan Cleary. Head coach Willie Peters confirmed the club's interest in the playmaker following Cleary's rejection of an $8.4 million deal. Walker's manager, Clinton Schifcofske, acknowledged mutual interest and confirmed that joining the expansion franchise is a viable option for the halfback.
Walker remains contracted to the Sydney Roosters through 2027, meaning a permanent move to the Chiefs would align with their 2028 debut. Schifcofske emphasized that Walker has not finalized any decisions regarding his future, as he remains focused on representing Australia at the Rugby League World Cup.
