Fernando Tatis Jr. started 50 games at second base in 2026. His Silver Slugger nominations bring the Padres’ 2027 right-field decision into focus.
Writer Alvin Garcia argues that the San Diego Padres should keep Fernando Tatis Jr. primarily in right field for the 2027 season while retaining second base as a flexible option. Tatis spent roughly 31% of his defensive innings at second base in 2026, recording 50 starts alongside 104 starts in right field, earning Silver Slugger finalist nominations in both the outfield and utility categories.
According to Garcia, a permanent move to second base only benefits San Diego if the team acquires a stronger replacement in right field. Statcast credited Tatis with two Outs Above Average at each position in 2026, giving manager Craig Stammen defensive viability in both spots while the front office evaluates free agency options.
