A chance glimpse of Blues & Soul magazine at college set John Green on a path that took him from engineering to radio, record shops and football, with a career shaped by music, publicity and a string of unexpected turns.

Sheffield native John Green has reflected on his diverse career across music, radio, and football, spanning over five decades. Green started in engineering before launching the pioneering 'Soul Shotgun' radio show on Radio Hallam in 1975, later working for Virgin Records and running Roulette Records in Sheffield.
Green subsequently transitioned into sports administration and event promotion, managing events at Sheffield Wednesday before serving as Chesterfield FC's acting chief executive during the club's 2001 financial crisis under Darren Brown. Fully cleared of wrongdoing, Green went on to overcome testicular cancer and continues to organize regional sporting dinners and charity events at age 72.
