Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer has issued a public statement expressing regret following a $30 million league fine and a one-year suspension. The penalties stem from an NBA investigation into alleged salary cap circumvention involving star forward Kawhi Leonard.
The sanctions represent an unprecedented administrative blow heading into the 2026-27 season. Alongside Ballmer’s personal suspension and financial penalty, the NBA stripped the Clippers of their next five first-round draft picks. The severe loss of draft equity severely restricts future roster management and luxury tax flexibility. Breaking his silence on Sunday night, Ballmer addressed the organizational crisis. “This has been a very difficult time for everybody associated with the Clippers, and for that, I have sincere regrets,” Ballmer stated.
Accepting responsibility for the operational disruption, Ballmer offered an explicit apology to stakeholders across the league. “I want to apologize to our fans, employees, and my fellow NBA team owners for the distraction and distress this matter has caused, for which I accept responsibility as principal owner.”
While accepting the immediate penalties, Ballmer indicated that disagreements persist regarding the league report’s specific findings. “We have communicated to the NBA that we are complying with the penalties assessed by the league, have paid the fine, and are moving forward. While there are still disagreements concerning the findings in the report, this is not where I want to focus. Team owners should support, not distract.”
Moving past the scandal may prove difficult for Los Angeles. Reports indicate the Justice Department has opened a criminal investigation into the circumstances surrounding Leonard’s arrangement. Still, Ballmer insists the franchise can maintain high competitiveness. “We will continue to build our team and invest in our community. The confidence of our fans is our priority.
