Brian Ortega has withdrawn from his scheduled lightweight debut against Renato Moicano at UFC 331 in Los Angeles following a facial injury. The former featherweight title challenger suffered an eye cut requiring stitches, postponing his 155-pound division premiere until November.
Ortega was scheduled to compete in front of his home crowd at UFC 331 on Saturday, September 19, seeking a crucial division reset. The California native had endured a difficult run over recent years, losing four of his past five octagon appearances while battling dangerous weight cuts at featherweight. Moving up to 155 pounds was intended to eliminate severe dehydration risks and revive his career. However, a facial cut above his eyebrow required medical stitches, ruling him out just days before fight night.
Addressing the late pullout on social media, Ortega confirmed that the injury was the sole reason for his removal from the fight card. “I have to pull out of the fight because of the stitches in my eye. I’m on weight, I’ve been training my ass off, and this has honestly been one of the best camps I’ve ever had. I was really looking forward to fighting at home in Los Angeles in front of my family, friends, and everyone who’s been supporting me.”
Despite the frustration, Ortega expressed confidence about his updated training setup and immediate fighting future. He stated: “My next fight is in soon, so I’m getting right back to training. We’ve brought some new people into camp and I’m excited to show you guys a new side of me. Thank you to everyone who’s been supporting me through all of this. I’ll see you guys in November.”
The late cancellation immediately reshuffled matchmaking plans for his scheduled opponent. Renato Moicano was swiftly handed a replacement fixture and will now headline a Halloween fight night against rising Australian lightweight Tom Nolan on October 31. Ortega will resume training as his stitches heal, targeting a November return.
