Jon Jones has responded strongly to performance-enhancing drug allegations made by Islam Makhachev regarding his legacy in the UFC. The former light heavyweight champion defended his anti-doping record online, dismissing claims that previous test failures invalidate his long undefeated run.
The exchange began when UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev questioned whether Jones’ streak should stand given his testing history. Makhachev acknowledged Jones’ overall athletic skill, yet pointed to his past drug test failures: “But he was caught doping twice, and I think that’s why his streak isn’t considered valid. Because he went into a fight while on PEDs and won. That’s where a new count should have started. But still, he’s one of the greatest. Maybe even the greatest.”
Jones, who boasts 18 career finishes and 17 UFC title fight victories, posted a public counterargument on social media to defend his record. Addressing the official findings, Jones wrote: “1. If you believe USADA for finding a pico gram in my system, then you must believe USADA when they say ‘It was not found to be PERFORMANCE ENHANCING or INTENTIONAL.’ You can’t have it both ways.”
Jones then cited his victory record while taking aim at Makhachev’s past stoppage defeat in the octagon. Jones stated: “2. Last I checked, my hand got raised every time I was in the octagon since any of you can remember. 3. Your own coach said I was ‘a gift from God.’ 4. Let’s not forget you’ve been KO’d, flat lined, went night night. 5. DC I kicked you in the head LOL keep telling yourself it was steroids.”
Makhachev refused to back down, offering a direct response to Jones’ statements. The Dagestani fighter replied: “But your whole life seems to be tied to breaking the rules one way or another, and somehow, you’re never the one to be blamed.” With Jones having been stripped of UFC titles three times in past years, the exchange highlights the ongoing debate surrounding fighter legacies and anti-doping compliance.
