Unrestricted free agent Cam Whitmore has emerged as a primary target for the Denver Nuggets, threatening the Los Angeles Lakers’ pursuit of the 22-year-old wing. The former first-round pick became available after Cleveland waived him on August 28.
Denver’s sudden pursuit creates serious friction for Los Angeles. The Lakers targeted the 6-foot-6 forward as an ideal low-cost gamble to add raw athleticism to their rotation. Having already re-signed Austin Reaves and added Collin Sexton, Quentin Grimes, and Sandro Mamukelashvili, Los Angeles does not require Whitmore to carry a primary offensive role. Instead, his powerful open-court burst provides genuine scoring potential for a bench unit seeking inexpensive depth around an established core. But competition changes the math entirely.
Originally selected 20th overall in the 2023 NBA Draft by Houston on a four-year, $15.6 million rookie contract, Whitmore remains younger than many recent draft picks. His 2025-26 campaign with the Washington Wizards ended prematurely after just 21 games due to a shoulder-related medical issue. Before the injury, he averaged 9.2 points and 2.8 rebounds in 16.9 minutes per game, shooting 45.6% from the field and 28.6% from three-point range. Normalized across his three NBA seasons, Whitmore has averaged 21.8 points per 36 minutes, demonstrating elite transition finishing when given minutes.
The transaction path adds extra intrigue to Denver’s interest. Cleveland initially acquired Whitmore from Washington as part of a five-team trade centered on Peyton Watson moving to the Cavaliers. The Nuggets received a 2031 first-round pick, a 2032 second-round pick, and Julian Reese in that exchange before Cleveland cut Whitmore. Now, Denver can effectively replace Watson’s lost wing athleticism at a minor financial commitment. Reporting on the fluid market, NBA insider Marc Stein noted: “The Nuggets, I’m told, have emerged as a team to watch in pursuit of Cam Whitmore,” That unexpected rivalry leaves Los Angeles facing tough decisions to secure their depth target.
