Dmitry Bivol has reportedly rejected a December trilogy fight against Artur Beterbiev to satisfy the WBO, opting instead to defend his title against Callum Smith on December 12 in Yekaterinburg, Russia. RCC Boxing chief German Titov stated that the third bout between Bivol and Beterbiev is now being targeted for April 2027 at the new RMK Arena in Chelyabinsk, Russia.
This decision introduces significant risks for Bivol, who underwent elbow surgery in July. His opponent, Callum Smith, possesses the reach and punching power to exploit any physical hesitation. Additionally, the delayed timeline means Beterbiev will be 42 years old by the projected April 2027 date, leading to concerns regarding his long period of inactivity.
