According to journalist Graham Spiers, O'Neill's frustration stems from the board's transfer window decisions and protracted negotiations to secure backroom staff members Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham. O'Neill also publicly admitted that the club failed to adequately replace midfielder Arne Engels, who was sold to West Ham United for £22 million.
