Update provided on Filip Hrgovic’s first world title defence: “It’s his contractual obligation”

IBF heavyweight champion Filip Hrgovic is expected to make his first title defense in early 2027 against Cuba's Frank Sanchez. Promoter Frank Warren confirmed that Hrgovic will not fight again in 2026 but will fulfill his contractual obligation to face Sanchez, who previously accepted a step-aside deal to allow the champion's title-winning bout against Moses Itauma.

Hrgovic has expressed interest in a homecoming fight in Zagreb, Croatia, following the reconstruction of the Kranjćevićeva Stadium. Although Hrgovic has shown preference for unification bouts, Sanchez's team has stated they will not accept another step-aside deal and intend to enforce the mandatory challenge.
