New VAR audio explains why Dean Huijsen’s yellow card became a red in the Madrid derby, while the penalty decision was upheld, after a pitch-side review.

Newly released VAR audio published by Mundo Deportivo on September 21, 2026, explains why referee Miguel Ángel Ortiz Arias sent off Real Madrid defender Dean Huijsen during the Madrid derby. Ortiz Arias initially awarded a penalty and issued a yellow card to Huijsen for fouling Giuliano Simeone early in the second half.
Following a pitch-side review recommended by video assistant referee Daniel Trujillo, Ortiz Arias determined Huijsen denied an obvious goal-scoring opportunity without contesting the ball. The referee concluded the goalkeeper could not intervene, subsequently upgrading the yellow card to a direct red card while maintaining the penalty award.
