Zaheer Khan was not the first choice, MS Dhoni forced CSK to make him coach

Chennai Super Kings have appointed former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan as their new head coach to succeed Stephen Fleming. While the franchise initially explored other candidates, the decision was ultimately driven by the strong backing of MS Dhoni. Dhoni reportedly intervened in the selection process alongside captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and the ownership group to secure Zaheer's appointment.

Before Zaheer was selected, CSK management held unsuccessful discussions with former England captain Eoin Morgan, batting coach Michael Hussey, and Hemang Badani. Morgan declined the role to focus on his television commentary commitments, while negotiations with Badani fell through over strategic differences regarding a multi-franchise mandate.
