Former Liverpool co-owner George Gillett passes away aged 87

Former Liverpool co-owner George Gillett has died at the age of 87. Gillett famously purchased a 50 percent stake in Liverpool in 2007 alongside business partner Tom Hicks. His death was officially confirmed in a statement released by Geoff Molson, the owner, president, and chief executive officer of the Montreal Canadiens, an NHL franchise Gillett also owned from 2001 to 2009.

Gillett and Hicks experienced an unpopular tenure at Anfield, marked by fractured relations between the partners and mounting concerns regarding potential administration. They were ultimately forced to sell Liverpool to Fenway Sports Group in 2010. His former co-owner, Tom Hicks, previously passed away at age 70.
