Kansas City initially surged to a 4-0 lead in the first inning against Bryan Hudson and Erick Fedde, powered by singles from Carter Jensen and Bobby Witt, a two-run hit by Maikel Garcia, and an RBI double by Vinnie Pasquantino.

Royals starting pitcher Seth Lugo lost the lead in the third inning after allowing four runs on consecutive hits from Kyle Teel, Miguel Vargas, and Munetaka Murakami. Lugo was pulled in the fourth inning, allowing reliever Anthony Gose to escape a bases-loaded jam and keep the score tied.
