NASCAR legend Darrell Waltrip steps away from public life after brain disease diagnosis

NASCAR Hall of Fame driver Darrell Waltrip is stepping away from public life at age 79 following a diagnosis of frontotemporal degeneration complicated by possible chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Waltrip's family announced the news in a statement, noting that the condition is likely linked to injuries sustained during his lengthy racing career. While the progressive disease will advance, his family confirmed his current symptoms remain mild.

Waltrip competed in the NASCAR Cup Series from 1972 to 2000, securing 84 career Cup Series victories and winning championships in 1981, 1982, and 1985. Following his driving career, he spent years as a prominent broadcaster for Fox Sports. His family stated that Waltrip is currently happy, otherwise healthy, and spending time with his wife Stevie, their daughters, and grandchildren.
