Luzardo throws bullpen in massive step toward return to Phillies rotation

Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Jesús Luzardo took a significant step toward returning from left shoulder inflammation by throwing a 30-pitch bullpen session on Thursday. Luzardo, who has been sidelined since September 7, reported feeling normal following the session. If he recovers well on Friday, the team expects him to throw a simulated game over the weekend ahead of the upcoming postseason.

Phillies interim manager Don Mattingly confirmed Luzardo looked comfortable and did not show distress in his shoulder. The club has not ruled out Luzardo starting a potential Game 3 in next week's National League Wild Card Series, though he could also be utilized in relief behind rotation leaders Zack Wheeler and Cristopher Sánchez.
