The St. Louis Cardinals secured their second consecutive losing season following a loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday. This marks the club's first back-to-back losing campaigns in a full schedule since 1958-59, and their third losing season in the last four years. The result follows a major roster rebuild during the previous offseason, when the franchise traded away Sonny Gray, Nolan Arenado, Willson Contreras, and Brendan Donovan.
Despite entering a rebuilding phase, the Cardinals were nine games over .500 in June and secured series victories against several postseason contenders, including the Los Angeles Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies, Atlanta Braves, and New York Yankees.
