‘Voice of the Royals,’ Denny Matthews, to call 8,000th game Friday

Kansas City Royals broadcaster Denny Matthews is scheduled to call his 8,000th game for the franchise on Friday night at Kauffman Stadium. The 83-year-old broadcaster has been with the team since its inaugural 1969 season, when he joined the organization at age 26. Matthews is one of four announcers in Major League Baseball history to broadcast for the same club for at least 50 seasons.

Over his career, Matthews has called approximately 86.6 percent of all games in Royals history. His broadcasting tenure includes all seven division titles, four pennants, and both World Series championships in 1985 and 2015. The Ford C. Frick Award recipient confirmed he intends to return for his 59th season next year.
