Anton Johansson Creates Separation in Roster Battle

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Anton Johansson is strengthening his bid for a regular-season NHL roster spot following strong preseason performances. Johansson recorded an assist during Detroit's 3-2 overtime win against the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday, giving him five assists over his past two games and the team scoring lead. Head coach Todd McLellan noted that Johansson has played exceptionally well compared to his competitors.

Johansson and Axel Sandin-Pellikka remain waiver-exempt for potential assignment to the Grand Rapids Griffins, unlike fellow roster hopefuls William Wallinder and Jacob Bernard-Docker. Detroit concludes its preseason on Saturday against the Columbus Blue Jackets as interim general manager Shawn Horcoff decides whether to carry seven or eight defensemen.
