Morgan Geekie led the Bruins in power-play goals. Why is he playing a new position?

Boston Bruins forward Morgan Geekie is shifting to the bumper position on the team's power play this season. Assistant coach Steve Spott recommended the positional change to utilize Geekie's hand-eye coordination and quick release. In a recent 5-1 preseason victory against the Philadelphia Flyers, Geekie demonstrated the role by redirecting a pass from David Pastrnak past goaltender Aleksei Kolosov.

Geekie led the Bruins with 12 power-play goals and scored a career-high 39 total goals last season primarily playing from the left elbow. In his new bumper role, Geekie will handle duties such as retrieving loose pucks, facilitating short passes, and deflecting shots in congested middle ice, following guidance previously shared by former Bruins center Patrice Bergeron.
