Jamie Chadwick saw in George Russell’s ‘data’ why he has a ‘huge advantage’ in Baku

Mercedes driver George Russell secured pole position for the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix with a 1:42.526 lap time in Baku. His qualifying margin of 0.837 seconds over Ferrari's Charles Leclerc marked the largest pole gap recorded in the 2026 Formula 1 season. Meanwhile, Russell's teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli crashed during Q1, leaving him set to start the race from 16th place on the grid.

Analyzing Russell's performance on Sky Sports F1, Jamie Chadwick explained that Russell gained a significant advantage through strategic battery management. Chadwick noted that Russell began his flying laps approximately 15 km/h slower on the main straight, conserving electrical power to deploy more energy through Turns 1, 2, and 3, as well as upon exiting Turn 16.
