The family of NASCAR Hall of Famer Darrell Waltrip announced that the 79-year-old has been diagnosed with Frontotemporal Degeneration (FTD), complicated by possible Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). The statement, shared publicly by FOX Sports reporter Bob Pockrass on September 23, noted that the condition will step him away from the public spotlight. Waltrip's family indicated that the possible CTE is likely linked to injuries sustained during his driving career.

Fans and fellow NASCAR figures responded with widespread messages of support and prayers following the announcement. Waltrip secured 84 Cup Series victories and three championships during his 29-year racing career before retiring in 2000. He later worked as a prominent FOX Sports broadcaster for 19 seasons from 2001 until 2019, having been inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2012.
