The Story in 60 Seconds

NHL players do not receive their regular salaries or individual team bonuses for playing in the postseason, outside of entry-level contracts and players over age 35. Instead, compensation comes from a designated Player Fund established under Article 28 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the NHL and NHLPA. This playoff prize pool distributes money to teams according to how far they advance in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The overall playoff bonus pool has expanded alongside rising league revenues since the 2012-13 season. Under recent allocations, the Stanley Cup Champion receives $6,539,375, while the Stanley Cup Finalist earns $3,781,250. Teams eliminated in earlier rounds and the Presidents' Trophy winner also receive set payouts ranging from $429,687 up to over $2 million.
