Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton takes aim at modern Formula 1 circuit design in Baku

Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton criticized modern Formula 1 circuit layouts during a live stage appearance at the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku. The seven-time world champion argued that several modern tracks restrict passing opportunities to the point where overtaking is almost impossible. While Hamilton did not name a specific circuit, his remarks followed widespread scrutiny of recent additions to the calendar.

The comments brought attention to Madrid's new Madring circuit, which hosted the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix and produced only nine on-track overtakes. Officials are reportedly evaluating modifications to widen the Turns 5 and 6 chicane for 2027 to improve wheel-to-wheel racing.
