ESPN's Emily Kaplan reports that the Los Angeles Kings are expected to pursue Connor McDavid, Auston Matthews, and Zach Werenski if they reach free agency in 2028. All three players are positioned to become free agents in two years, and the Kings' recent history of aggressive pursuits, such as trading for Artemi Panarin, suggests they will remain active in seeking elite talent.
Kaplan also analyzed the Kings' current direction, noting that following Anze Kopitar's retirement, Drew Doughty was named team captain under new head coach Peter Laviolette. Despite losing in the first round of the playoffs for five consecutive seasons, Los Angeles continues to avoid a rebuild, signing veteran free agents Erik Gustafsson, Erik Haula, Corey Perry, and Mats Zuccarello.
