The Story in 60 Seconds

NFL players are increasingly navigating the risks of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) as awareness of brain trauma grows across the sport. In interviews with ESPN, more than 30 active and retired players addressed how research and health risks shape their career decisions. While some athletes view long-term brain trauma as an acceptable tradeoff for generational wealth and athletic legacy, others take proactive measures to minimize damage through enhanced helmets and Guardian Caps.

Several players noted that CTE concerns have led to earlier retirements, while others rely on league safety rules and upgraded equipment. A recent British Medical Journal study cited by researchers found that at least one in four former NFL players who died between 2016 and 2021 had CTE at their time of death, continuing to fuel discussions about athlete safety.
