Fernando Alonso has explained his decision to sign a contract extension with Aston Martin for the 2027 season, citing his ongoing competitive drive and love of racing. The announcement confirms that the team will maintain an unchanged driver lineup next year, alongside teammate Lance Stroll. Alonso stated that he still feels capable of competing at the highest level as he prepares for his 24th season in Formula 1.
The 45-year-old two-time World Champion revealed he considered his previous sabbatical from the sport and determined he belonged in the cockpit rather than watching races from home. Alonso noted that contract talks with team owner Lawrence Stroll took just five minutes, and he emphasized that any potential non-driving role with the organization will only be discussed once he officially retires from racing.
