The legendary Os du Randt says gaining the acceptance of the Springbok change room helped silence the “gremlins” in his mind during an extraordinary return to Test rugby.

Former South Africa prop Os du Randt revealed on the Boks Unpacked X The Verdict podcast that gaining acceptance from his Springbok teammates helped him overcome self-doubt during his 2004 international comeback. After retiring in 2000 due to recurring knee injuries, head coach Jake White persuaded him to return. Du Randt faced criticism about his age and fitness from external observers, but the support of teammates like Bakkies Botha during the jersey presentation proved to be a pivotal turning point.
Du Randt admitted he battled mental doubts as he transitioned from playing full 80-minute matches to 50-minute appearances. Following his return match against Ireland in Bloemfontein on June 12, 2004, the two-time World Cup winner went on to help the Springboks secure both the 2004 Tri-Nations title and the 2007 Rugby World Cup trophy.
