New Jersey Devils head coach Sheldon Keefe was pleased with his team's overall performance but wants to fix their lack of secondary scoring chances. The Devils earned a 3-2 overtime win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday night in their season opener in Newark, outshooting Philadelphia 44-25. Keefe emphasized that the team must generate more traffic in front of the net and create secondary opportunities on loose rebounds.
Dougie Hamilton scored New Jersey's first goal with Anthony Mantha screening goaltender Joseph Woll, which Keefe highlighted as an ideal example. Rasmus Ristolainen and Travis Sanheim scored for Philadelphia, while Luke Hughes tied the game before scoring the overtime winner off a Jesper Bratt assist. Keefe noted that creating multiple layers of attack will be a major focus during Friday's practice.
