Offseason speculation continues to link Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo with a move to the Boston Celtics, but a leading NBA analyst has questioned the reality of such a scenario. The Celtics and Bucks both face significant pressure after underwhelming ends to their seasons. Milwaukee missed the playoffs for the first time in a decade, while the No. 2 seed Celtics were eliminated in the first round by the Philadelphia 76ers.
The basis for the trade talk involves Antetokounmpo’s contract situation. He is eligible for an extension in October and could become a free agent in 2027, creating leverage for a potential trade if he declines to re-sign. For Boston, any package would likely have to include All-Star Jaylen Brown, partly due to the significant luxury tax pressure created by his and Jayson Tatum’s max contracts.
However, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst has expressed serious doubts about the rumoured move. “I have not heard that Boston is on Giannis’ list. I have not heard that Giannis is prepared to sign the extension with Boston. So frankly, the Jaylen Brown part is new to me. If I hear a yes-yes, now, let’s have a discussion,”
Windhorst clarified his position, stating that a lack of confirmation on his part does not mean the rumours are untrue, but that key conditions remain unmet. “By the way, maybe they are true. Just because I haven’t heard it doesn’t mean it’s not true. But until those two things are true, I don’t think it’s really something that’s in the world of reality.”
Windhorst’s comments highlight the primary obstacle in any potential deal. Boston would be unlikely to trade a foundational player like Brown, who is on a long-term contract, for Antetokounmpo without a firm commitment that he would sign an extension. Without that assurance, the risk of acquiring the two-time MVP for only one guaranteed season would be substantial.
