Lyle Odelein, the Saskatchewan farm kid who grew up wanting only to wear the bleu, blanc et rouge, has died. The former Montreal Canadiens defenceman suffered a heart attack Friday night.
Former Montreal Canadiens defenceman Lyle Odelein has died at age 58 after suffering a heart attack. Odelein played seven seasons with Montreal and was a key member of their last Stanley Cup championship team in 1993, playing all 83 regular-season games and all 20 playoff games during the title run.
Across a 16-season NHL career spanning 1,056 games, Odelein played for several clubs including New Jersey, Chicago, Dallas, Florida, Pittsburgh, and served as the first captain in Columbus Blue Jackets history. He amassed 2,316 penalty minutes throughout his career, which remains among the highest totals in league history.
