Newcastle will need to keep a close eye on the Roosters’ breakout star

Writer Bella Gillespie argues that the Newcastle Knights must closely monitor Sydney Roosters centre Robert Toia in the NRL grand final. While stars such as James Tedesco, Sam Walker, and Mark Nawaqanitawase draw significant attention, Gillespie highlights the 22-year-old Toia as potentially the Roosters' most dangerous weapon. Toia made his State of Origin debut for Queensland this season and has established a potent edge partnership with winger Nawaqanitawase.
Throughout the 2026 campaign, Toia recorded 15 tries, 13 try-assists, 18 line breaks, and 112 tackle breaks, alongside an 89.5% tackle efficiency. In the semi-final win over the Cronulla Sharks, he scored a try and registered eight tackle breaks, which Gillespie notes demonstrates his ability to consistently challenge top-tier opposition on the biggest stages.
