On Saturday, Oct. 3, the New Jersey Devils had their first road game of the 2026-27 season against the New York Islanders. After a strong performance in OT against the Philadelphia Flyers in their home opener on Oct.
The New York Islanders defeated the New Jersey Devils 6-0 on Saturday, Oct. 3, handing New Jersey its first loss of the season. After a scoreless opening period, the Islanders broke the game open with three goals in the second period and added three more in the third. Devils head coach Sheldon Keefe kept goaltender Nico Daws in the net for five goals before pulling him late for an extra attacker, leading to an empty-net tally.
The Hockey Writers highlighted key concerns for New Jersey, including goaltending depth and struggling special teams. Daws faltered after stopping nine shots in the first period, while the Devils went scoreless on five power-play opportunities and conceded a power-play goal. The writer argued that despite the lopsided defeat, it is only New Jersey's second game of the season and too early to panic.
