How Peralta reclaimed his mojo as “Fastball Freddy” began with one pitch during his poor Rays debut — but his turnaround involves much more.

Freddy Peralta has revitalized his season with the Tampa Bay Rays, earning the start for Game 2 of the American League Division Series against the New York Yankees. After posting a 5.37 ERA across 22 starts with the New York Mets and his Tampa Bay debut, Peralta finished the regular season with a 2.26 ERA over his final nine starts. The turnaround followed a mid-game mechanical adjustment in his debut that led him to pitch exclusively from the stretch.
Tampa Bay acquired Peralta at the trade deadline in exchange for prospects Aidan Smith, Émilien Pitre, and Gary Gill Hill. Working with pitching coach Kyle Snyder and bullpen coach Jorge Moncada, Peralta abandoned his deliberate windup, increased his changeup usage, and focused on moving faster down the mound. Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns acknowledged New York could not achieve the same results with Peralta despite pursuing similar mechanical goals.
