Ovechkin Addresses Fans In Announcement About Final NHL Season

Washington Capitals superstar forward Alex Ovechkin announced on Monday that the 2026-27 season will be his final year in the NHL. In a statement released alongside the organization ahead of the team's first home game, Ovechkin shared that he and his family made the decision during the summer, expressing gratitude to the fans and hockey community for supporting his career.

Ovechkin previously signed a one-year, $4.25 million contract extension for the season. Having surpassed Wayne Gretzky's all-time goal-scoring record in April 2025, Ovechkin has spent his entire 21-year NHL career with Washington, highlighted by a Stanley Cup championship in 2018. It remains unconfirmed whether he plans to retire from hockey entirely or continue playing in Russia.
