Arsenal legend Tony Adams has revealed he was prepared to sign for Manchester United in 1996 before Arsene Wenger's arrival altered his plans. Following Bruce Rioch's dismissal, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson contacted Adams to capitalize on Arsenal's managerial uncertainty. Adams initially told Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood that he intended to leave the north London club.
Arsenal successfully convinced the defender to stay by trebling his wages ahead of Wenger's appointment in October 1996. Adams remained with the Gunners for his entire 19-year senior career, making 669 appearances, captaining the team to 10 major trophies, and winning two Premier League and FA Cup Doubles under Wenger before retiring in 2002.
