Mercedes were hopeful of a big performance leap when they brought a sizeable upgrade package to Sepang but it didn’t play out as intended. Ahead…

Former Formula 1 driver Jolyon Palmer has warned that Mercedes faces major long-term concerns due to their recurring inability to make car upgrades deliver on track. Speaking on the F1 Nation podcast, Palmer sounded alarm bells following an underwhelming upgrade package introduced in Sepang. While Kimi Antonelli finished P2 and George Russell suffered an engine failure, team principal Toto Wolff was left frustrated as the expected pace gains failed to materialize.
According to the report, the new package improved cornering speeds but made the W17 draggy, costing straight-line speed and upsetting balance in low-speed sections. Palmer argued this lack of correlation between factory development and on-track results remains a perennial issue. With rivals McLaren, Red Bull, and Ferrari developing efficiently, Palmer believes failing to solve these development struggles could jeopardize Mercedes' competitiveness in coming seasons.
