Like Brunson, Towns is willing to take a pay cut to help the Knicks maintain a competitive roster
New York Knicks star center Karl-Anthony Towns revealed that contract extension negotiations with the team have stalled ahead of the regular-season tip-off on October 20. Towns is eligible for a four-year, $276 million extension but noted that reaching an agreement appears unlikely. The Knicks' front office has reportedly offered between $45 million and $50 million annually rather than a maximum deal.
Towns stated he is willing to accept a discount to maintain roster flexibility and help the franchise navigate second-apron penalties, provided he feels appropriately valued. Since joining New York in 2024, Towns helped lead the franchise to an NBA championship while averaging 22.2 points and 12.3 rebounds per game.
