The Athletics are considering Phillies executive Sam Fuld and Cubs assistant general manager Jared Banner for their vacant general manager position, according to Patrick Mooney and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. The vacancy opened after Oakland dismissed longtime general manager David Forst in early August, placing Dan Feinstein as interim GM. Reports indicate the team expects to make a final hiring decision this week.
Fuld previously finished his MLB playing career with Oakland before serving in front-office and general manager roles with Philadelphia under Dave Dombrowski. Banner joined the Cubs in 2020 after player development stints with the Red Sox and Mets, earning a promotion to assistant GM in late 2023. Other reported candidates interviewed include Mike Rizzo, James Click, Mike Groopman, Taylor Smith, and internal candidate Billy Owens.
