New York Islanders defenseman Alexander Romanov is expected to miss six to eight months after tearing the ACL in his right knee, the team announced Wednesday. Romanov suffered the injury during a third-period collision with Mika Zibanejad in a 5-2 loss to the New York Rangers on Tuesday. He is scheduled to undergo surgery to repair the torn ligament, placing his return near the end of the regular season at the earliest.
The extended absence marks the second consecutive season Romanov has dealt with a major injury, having played just 15 games last season due to shoulder surgery. The Islanders are expected to place the 26-year-old on long-term injured reserve, leaving head coach Pete DeBoer to adjust the team's defensive pairings without one of their top-four blueliners.
