It is a harsh reminder that only Father Time is undefeated in sports. He comes for everybody eventually, no matter how great that player is, and he is unforgiving when he does.
Writer Adam Gretz argues that age is finally catching up to the iconic rivalry between Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby. The Washington Capitals earned a 5-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday night in the first of four scheduled matchups this season. However, neither superstar made a notable impact on the scoreboard, combining for zero points across eight total goals scored.
Gretz notes that the 41-year-old Ovechkin played just 14 minutes with two shots, while the 39-year-old Crosby finished as a minus-4. Although both players are expected to still have productive moments throughout the year, Gretz contends that fans must adjust their expectations as the longtime NHL stars enter the twilight of their storied careers.
